What Is the South American Palm Weevil?
The South American Palm Weevil (SAPW) (Rhynchophorus palmarum) is an invasive, destructive beetle species that poses a deadly threat to palm trees across Southern California. Native to Central and South America, it has rapidly spread into Orange County, feeding on and ultimately collapsing some of the region’s most iconic palms — including Canary Island Date Palms, Queen Palms, and Mexican Fan Palms.
The adult weevil lays eggs inside the palm’s crown. Once hatched, the larvae burrow deep into the trunk, consuming the living tissue that keeps the tree upright and healthy. Trees often show no visible symptoms until they are beyond saving.
Worse yet, SAPW is a known vector of the red ring nematode, which causes Red Ring Disease — an incurable, rapidly fatal infection in palm trees.
Signs of South American Palm Weevil Infestation
Early detection is key. Unfortunately, many infestations go unnoticed until the damage is advanced. Be alert for these warning signs:
- Wilting, drooping, or collapsed fronds at the crown
- Unusual softness, foul odor, or rot near the top of the trunk
- Chewing or scratching sounds from within the tree
- Boreholes or oozing sap on the trunk
- Presence of large, black beetles or cocoons at the base
Sudden, complete tree collapse (late-stage indicator)
Our Proven Palm Weevil Prevention & Treatment Approach
At Orange County Plant Healthcare, we specialize in proactive and responsive palm weevil solutions. Our certified arborists understand the unique biology of local palms and the environmental factors accelerating SAPW spread across OC.
Our Services Include:
Detailed On-Site Tree Inspections
Using crown analysis, frond pattern reading, and trunk scanning to catch infestations early — before irreversible damage occurs.
Systemic Insecticide Trunk Injections
We apply targeted trunk injections that move through the palm’s vascular system, killing larvae and deterring adult weevils — without harming beneficial insects.
Biological & Eco-Friendly Treatment Options
Where appropriate, we utilize biological agents to control SAPW populations without disrupting your landscape’s ecosystem.
Preventive Palm Care Programs
Our palm protection plans include seasonal inspections, nutritional support, and ongoing weevil defense — tailored to your property’s risk level and palm species.
Emergency Palm Response Service

Frequently Asked Questions
The SAPW primarily targets Canary Island Date Palms, but it also attacks Queen Palms, Mexican Fan Palms, Royal Palms, and other ornamental species common in Orange County. Mature, tall palms are especially vulnerable due to their large, nutrient-rich crowns.
Early-stage infestations can sometimes be treated successfully with systemic insecticide injections and supportive nutrition. However, once the crown is damaged or collapse begins, the tree often cannot be saved. Early detection and prevention are critical.
Our ISA-certified arborists use a combination of visual crown inspections, borehole detection, frond alignment analysis, and acoustic monitoring (listening for larval activity). We also evaluate environmental risk factors such as soil health and irrigation patterns.
Yes. We use targeted trunk injection methods that minimize environmental exposure and avoid spraying broad-spectrum pesticides. Our approach is eco-conscious and safe for bees, birds, pets, and children.
We recommend biannual inspections for most properties, but if you’re near known infestation zones or have high-value palms, quarterly monitoring may be necessary. Prevention is more affordable and effective than emergency removal or replacement.
Treatment costs depend on the palm species, size, number of trees, and severity of infestation. We offer affordable treatment plans and custom pricing after an on-site risk assessment. Contact us for a free quote.
